HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU CHANGE YOUR VEHICLE’S OIL?

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU CHANGE YOUR VEHICLE’S OIL?

Regular oil changes help your engine run smoother, last longer, and avoid costly repairs. Clean engine oil reduces internal wear, controls engine temperature, and prevents harmful sludge buildup that can damage critical components. Keeping up with oil maintenance is one of the easiest ways to protect overall vehicle performance.

Why Regular Oil Changes Matter

Clean engine oil does far more than simply lubricate moving parts. It helps reduce friction between internal components, carries heat away from critical engine areas, and keeps contaminants from building up inside the engine. Oil also protects metal surfaces from moisture-related corrosion while helping maintain proper sealing between pistons and cylinder walls for efficient power delivery.

As oil ages, it gradually becomes contaminated with dirt, fuel residue, and carbon deposits. Once the oil loses its protective qualities, the engine must work harder, creating additional heat and wear.

Recommended Oil Change Intervals

Oil change frequency depends on the type of oil your vehicle uses and your driving habits.

  • Conventional engine oil: typically every 5,000–7,500 km or every 3–6 months
  • Full synthetic engine oil: generally every 8,000–12,000 km or every 6–12 months

In many cases, Stoney Trail Mazda recommends servicing your vehicle every 8,000 km or every 6 months, whichever comes first, to help maintain reliable performance and long-term engine health.

What Happens When Oil Changes Are Delayed?

Ignoring oil maintenance can slowly lead to severe engine damage over time.

  1. Shortly overdue oil begins to darken, and fuel economy may decrease.
  2. As the oil further deteriorates, lubrication weakens and the engine may sound noisier or feel rougher during operation.
  3. Severely worn oil can thicken into sludge, trapping heat and damaging internal engine components.

In extreme cases, complete engine failure can occur, often resulting in repair costs between $5,000 and $10,000 CAD or more.
