2015 Mazda CX-5 SUV – Impressive fuel economy, and fun to drive!
Up against competitors like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Ford Escape, the new Mazda CX-5 offers some sizzle, in addition to the usual benefits that comes with purchasing a compact SUV. Stylish, comfortable and spacious, with impressive fuel economy and top safety scores, the 2015 CX-5 is certainly an interesting choice to consider, and to top it all off, it’s also fun to drive.
First off, consumers should know that Mazda’s compact SUV comes equipped with SkyActiv technology. Buyers of this model, whether it be the base GX, mid-level GS, or top-of-the-line GT model, can enjoy improved fuel economy, enhanced safety, lower emissions, and as Mazda has described, a more intuitive response to driver input.
For example, models that are equipped with the SkyActiv-G 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine, such as the base GX, will produce 10-15 percent more low- to mid-range torque, while drivers also benefit from 15 percent lower fuel consumption. As for power, the 2.0-litre engine will produce 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque, and is coupled to a standard 6-speed manual transmission. The quick-shifting 6-speed automatic with Sport mode is optional, and may be considered one of the most responsive transmissions in its class.
All-wheel drive is also optional. Consumers that are considering the base model with the automatic transmission and front-wheel drive can expect a fuel economy rating of 8.9/7.3 litres per 100 kilometres (city/highway), or 9.3 and 7.6 L/100km for the AWD model.
For a little more sizzle, consumers can opt for the SkyActiv-G 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine found on the top two trims. Driving pleasure is sure to be increased as this engine generates more power with 184 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque, and still remains fuel-efficient with a rating of 9.6 and 7.4 L/100km when equipped with the automatic and FWD.
If safety is a concern, the 2015 CX-5 comes available with two i-Activsense active safety technologies: a blind-spot monitoring system that is standard as of the GS trim, and Mazda’s smart city brake support system that buyers can opt for on the top GT model with the Technology Package.
As for spaciousness, the SUV offers 5-passenger seating, and owners of the new 2015 model can fold the rear seats with a 60/40-split, increasing cargo volume from 966 litres to 1,835. Or they can fold the seats with a 40/20/40-split when leasing or purchasing the GS or GT trims, which adds another 17 liters of volume.
Finally, in terms of comfort, convenience and infotainment, consumers may want to check out the available auto-dimming rearview mirror with a garage door opener, the navigation system that is offered with the Technology package on the top trim, and both the rearview camera and moonroof, which are standard as of the mid-level trim. Heated front seats and leather-trimmed upholstery are also available. Buyers may also want to opt for satellite radio, Bluetooth, HD Radio and/or the AM/FM CD player with a 9-speaker audio system with a surround sound system, available depending on the model.
The 2015 Mazda CX-5 is a worthy opponent in the compact SUV segment, due to its fun-to-drive status when equipped with the 2.5-litre engine, its impressive fuel economy ratings, available features, spacious interior and top safety ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
